Research for children and young people - for a healthy life

DZKJ – partner site Munich

The Munich partner site is dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of children and adolescents through collaborative interdisciplinary research. Our mission is to understand the underlying causes of diseases, develop precise diagnostic methods, and create innovative therapeutic strategies. In collaboration with esteemed partner institutions—Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), Technische Universität München (TUM), the university hospitals of LMU and TUM, Helmholtz Munich, and the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry—the partner site provides a world-class research environment for the scientists involved.

Currently, 21 DZKJ research groups are actively engaged at the Munich site.

Research profile

The Munich partner site contributes to the DZKJ through its expertise in immune and metabolic system research. It focuses on identifying genetic factors that lead to disease, developing precision diagnostic methods, and advancing cell and gene therapy strategies. Research into rare diseases is being harnessed to redefine our understanding of common diseases and to develop curative treatments for conditions once considered incurable.

Scientists at the Munich site use advanced technology platforms for precise biomarker identification, AI-driven analytics, and the study of disease mechanisms in vitro and in vivo, including transgenic animal models. These resources also support the development of innovative cell and gene therapies for pediatric patients. The partner site is committed to fostering early-career scientists, enhancing patient engagement, and collaborating with the German Center for Mental Health (DZPG) and other German Centers for Health Research.
